In any monarchy, the nobles must be suitably pampered, and in the decadent late stages of the Empire, there was no limit to the hedonism of the ruling elite. This worsened as the nobles delegated decisions until there was very little for themselves to do except to fritter away their time, most notably on video games, turning Earth into a glorified pleasure planet. As automation technology furthered, the nobles scoured their schedules so that even the most basic ablutions were given over to machine servants; after all, time spent bathing is time not spent gaming.
Eventually, even game creation fell to the machines, and they began work on their greatest task yet: the fifth installment in the critically-acclaimed and successful Yogventures series. To create the ultimate game, a vast army of testers would be needed, a role easily filled by the peasant class who regarded game testing as a prestigious position.
As they entered the beta phase, the hyperlanes collapsed, and since only the pampered were left on Earth, there was nobody to test the ever-growing spaghetti code of Yogventures 5. Development had to continue, but without testers, the ever-growing game bloated with untested and unstable features. If only the hyperlanes would reopen so that new testers could be found…
