''Precursors'' are long dead galactic empires predating even the fallen empires and the curators. Their ruins are scattered across the galaxy for the player to find. Only one precursor event chain (out of 5 available) is placed in a campaign during the galaxy generation.

Upon starting a precursor event chain the player has to successfully survey 6 precursor related anomalies (to gather their artifacts) in order to find the location of the precursor's home system. The first empire to survey said home world receives large amounts of resources as a reward. If a player has ran out of planets to survey (therefore no possible anomalies) a precursor anomaly will be generated every ~30 years.

| event_text = It would seem that the Cybrex re-evaluated their galactic crusade against organic life at some point during its seventeenth year. Whether this change was prompted by losses on the battlefield or an ideological shift in their networked consensus we may never know, but for whatever reason the Cybrex decided to halt their campaign.<br><br>They began a slow withdrawal that lasted for nearly a century, until they eventually vanished completely. We now know that they retreated to this system, where they had constructed a massive ring world designed to house their entire civilization.<br><br>They isolated themselves here for several millennia, until an independent explorer chanced upon their system and spread its location to the rest of the galaxy. The news that the dreaded Cybrex had been found again prompted several neighboring powers to organize a massive military expedition, which bombarded the Cybrex ring world into rubble.<br><br>Strangely, the Cybrex seem to have offered no resistance whatsoever.
